How to send text message to a number not in contacts?

I tried to respond to a Craigs list add via text & could not figure out how to put in the phone number! I do not want to add the person in my contacts. All of the instructions that I read show to select the recipient from the contacts list!

Just type the number into the To: field. I just checked and it accepts a number.

Thanks, that's what I did, but I wasn't sure it really sent it.

If it moved up your screen on a green background it was sent. If it turned blue, the other guy has an iPhone.
