iMessage questions???

Ok so iMessage uses your data, right

Is there a way to choose to send someone a text over a IMessage

Basically my situation is my friend was in America and has his data turned off so he doesn't get any charges

I needed to contact him and sent him a message and it sent as an iMessage but I know he won't receive it as I know his data is off the only way I know be would get my message is if I sent him a normal text but I had to turn off iMessage in my settings in order to text him, is there an easier way to choose from iMessage to text

Sorry if this question has been answered all ready I did a search and could not find anything.
