Have you tried the one that comes with the phone? I use it all the time and have never had any problems with it.

Here's the music app that's on the iPhone 3G. It's what you use to play any iTunes purchased content.

The iPhone 3G is pretty old by now... Your favorite app may not be supported anymore.
I'm not positive of any apps that still work with iOS 4 software..

Unfortunately, it does. Jailbreaking for a streaming app In Cydia is plausible for him. I'm positive you can get grooveshark from there.
