Iphone 3gs Appstore update check turn off?

Hello again everyone.
Thank you very much for previous help. I have one last issue. I guess most of you are familiar with the Appstore "app" in the iPhone 3gs. I have tried to figure out any way to turn off this update check which occurs every time I turn on Data connection. I notice this red number appearing beside Appstore. This might be impossible to turn off, I am not sure, but if it is I would be glad to do and prefer manual update checks because I don't like it to steal bandwidth from me.

Go to Settings > iTunes App Store, and toggle off Automatic Updates. As for the badge itself, it doesn't go away until you've updated all your apps on iOS 6 and below.

I got that setting turned off, but there is no way to get rid of that badge? I get the feeling it keeps checking for updates whenever I connect...

The badge is just there to show that you have an update or however many are present in the badge. The badge will only update when you open up the AppStore application itself, as it does on every other iOS out there.
