IPhone 3GS camera

Just wondering about the camera, my friends iPhone has a zoom function by tapping the screen
I run IOS 5.1 not sure what he does, but I think his is jail broken.
Do separate camera apps have a zoom function?

Hi guys,
Just found out you pinch and spread two fingers to zoom
The old IOS you tap the screen and use a slider bar......I've answered my own query
