iPhone 4 deleted my contacts!

Has anyone else experienced this? It was completely out of the blue & my phone was not plugged into anything at the time, including iTunes. How can I get them back? My backup assistant app is not working & neither is the web version of backup assistant. I'm probably going to need to go to the Verizon store, but I'm hoping to avoid doing so if someone here knows of a fix. Thanks!!

PS-I should add that my contacts r no longer in my iTunes & haven't been for several mos. this happened when I switched to a new computer ..they didn't map over. However, I haven't had my phone plugged into iTunes in quite some time This random event just happened yesterday.
