Hey all, I've been trying to figure this out all day and still having some problems. I have an iPhone 4 running a jailbroken version of 4.3.3. I want to upgrade to the latest 5.x and preserve my JB and unlock. I tried using redsn0w first but that didn't work, when I tried to restore the custom IPSW iTunes says I'm not allowed to update to that release/version. Next I tried Absinthe but it says you have to have 5.1.1 installed prior to attempting the jailbreak and that Apple isn't signing 5.1.1 anymore, is there any way to get around this? Thanks for any help.

The only way to do it is if you have the SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1. To check if you have this, open up Cydia on your iPhone, on the top of the main screen, check which iOS are listed. If you see 5.1.1, you can upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 then jailbreak it. The only iOS that you can upgrade or downgrade to are the ones that you see listed on the top of Cydia. There is no workaround, there is no shortcut, or backdoor or some hack/method to get around the need of blobs. They are MANDATORY

In addition... unlocking is going to be determined by your iPhone's Baseband (Modem Firmware.) Since you're sitting @ 4.3.3 currently, chances are you're running the 4.10.01 Baseband. Which is only unlockable via the Gevey Ultra SIM interposer. Your only other option for unlocking would be a paid IEMI unlock. And honestly, I only recommend paying for unlocks if it's an absolute last resort.

I have SHSH listings for everything from 4.3.3 through 6.0 including 5.5.1r1 - I will lookup a guide on using the blobs to restore

And yes I'm running 4.10.01

Download iOS 5.1.1 IPSW for the iPhone that matches your iPhone type

iOS 5.1.1r1 GSM: http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS5.1.1/041-6051.2012.0525.Cvby7/iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B208_Restore.ipsw

Run RedSn0w as administrator. Go to Extras > Custom IPSW, select your IPSW that you downloaded, and create a custom IPSW. This will preserve your baseband if you want to use a Geveey SIM. If you're planning on using a factory unlock/IMEI unlock, you won't need to do this. Go to Extras > Even More > Restore. Select IPSW and point it to the IPSW that you download that matches your iPhone version (either GSM or CDMA), or if you're preserving it, point it to the custom IPSW that you created. Then for blobs, click Remote. It'll automatically retrieve the blobs that matches the IPSW you're trying to restore to. Click Next. Follow the on-screen instructions. After the upgrade, if you're in recovery mode, kick it out using a Recovery Fix in the Extras > Recovery Fix in RedSn0w.

Now that you're on iOS 5.1.1, go to RedSn0w > Extras > Select IPSW. Point it to the CLEAN IPSW that you downloaded, not the one you created. Click back, click Jailbreak. Tick "Install Cydia". Follow the on-screen instructions.

Thanks, this helped a ton! I followed your instructions exactly and the jailbreak seems to have worked properly. The only issue is I am now seeing 'No Signal' in my status bar. How do I get signal back?

Plug your device in, and open up RedSn0w and go to Extras > Identify and see if it lists out your baseband. Make sure your phone is on the activation process first. Otherwise, you're going to have to hacktivate it and see if it works out. You can try running RedSn0w, select the IPSW that's on your iPhone, then click Jailbreak. Put the device into DFU mode, then tick ONLY deactivate. Click Next and see if your device will hacktivate it. Otherwise, you're going to have to restore it back to a clean iOS 5.1.1, then rejailbreak it. During the tickbox screen in RedSn0w, instead of just ticking Install Cydia, tick Deactivate as well.

I got it working, I guess the issue was because I didn't go through the ios setup before I selected the clean ispw and jb'd so the sim never got activated. I went back and did the process again but this time going through the ios setup first and it worked :) Thanks for all your help!
