iPhone 4s will not download podcasts (Verizon)

Hi, I am a long time lurker first time poster,

I just got my iPhone 4s on Verizon yesterday and I got a problem, the main reason I got a iPhone is because my first gen iPod touch is dying and I tought on killing 2 birds with one stone, (get my new phone and a new ipod) and just carrying one device to my car was going to be a big plus, but now I have been trying to download my podcasts (Adam carolla show, carcast, ace on the house) but the iPhone will not download them, it just gets stuck on the preparing to download and just stay there, I left it overnight and it did not downloaded a single podcast,

I have the verizon hot spot and when I turn it on and use my iPad or old iPod touch to download the podcasts it does work but not directly to the iPhone

Did I miss a setting?
Do I have a defective iPhone?
Please if anybody can help me I will be very gratefull,
