I've just bought an iPhone 5c for my daughter from gumtree and know I think it's been reported stolen, does any one know is there something I can do about this, my daughter is very upset

First thing to do is contact local law enforcement to verify if the phone was stolen, then contact gumtree and demand a refund. If you paid with a credit card and you're refused a refund, you can initiate a chargeback with your credit card company.

You can run a check on the IMEI as well. Normally pretty accurate.

I did a Checkmend and its blocked, and now I spending more money to buy another one
