How can I use my Verizon iPhone 4 internationally, without things like Skype?

The Verizon iPhone 4 doesn't work internationally. From my understanding, it doesn't have a GSM chip, which it would need to work internationally. You'll need to rely on third party apps for the time being to make calls internationally.
