my dad broke his iphone 4 and got a new one on insurance, however he only broke the screen,
vodafone said they are sending him a new sim and phone and that the old phone will be 'locked'
i was thinking of putting a new screen in it and using it myself for work, by 'locking' do they mean its disabled from ever getting a signal, or does it void insurance if they find it to be used again?

will jailbreaking solve it if so? or is it completely no use at all? thanks guys

Locking means it's blacklisted on multiple carriers in this case. Some may still accept it some may not even with an unlock. It's hard to get a factory/IMEI unlock on a locked device unless its a backdoor unlock which is illegal and not supported. In some situations, ultrasn0w can work and in some situations interposers like the Gevey can work.
