Hi all.

I have a 3GS I have been working on in order to give to my son as a Christmas present. I have put the man hours in and repaired everything except the home button. When I get the money together I will be replacing the digitizer frame and home button.

I want to jailbreak. I have the phone with the original network sim in now (T-Mobile/Orange UK) and it is running 5.1.1.

Since I have no home button working, I have used redsn0w to create a 5.1.1 ispw with DFU mode, so when the phone boots it goes to DFU mode for me. However, when I try to upload this ispw through itunes (Shift+Restore > Select ispw) I get the error 3194.

I have checked my hosts file and with regards to apple this currently reads:
Code:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

There are no other lines of code in there for apple, yet I am still getting this error. Am I missing a trick here? I don't want to update to iOS6 as I want an untethered jailbreak as I want to remove the simlock on the device.

Any advice here would be much appreciated.

Delete the host.umbrella file in the same directory. Flush your DNS, then retry. Drop your firewall for a bit during the process as well.

But from what I'm getting at. I'm seeing that your 3GS is already on 5.1.1. You can just jailbreak straight from there. Without SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1, you cannot restore back to iOS 5.1.1, and restoring will only get you to 6.0.1 at this current moment. If your 3GS is an old bootrom iPhone 3GS, you have an untethered jailbreak. To check this, go to Settings > General > About and in the serial, see if it starts with MB or MC. MB is old bootrom, MC is new. If it's MB, upgrade to 6.0.1 and jailbreak if you want. Otherwise, download the 5.1.1 IPSW for the 3GS, open RedSn0w, go to Extras > Select IPSW, point it to the 5.1.1 IPSW you downloaded, go back, click Jailbreak, put the iPhone into DFU mode and let the kernel patching and exploiting begin. Then you'll be approached with several options with checkboxes.

Tick "Install Cydia" is a must. If you want to unlock the device free using UltraSn0w, you'll also need to tick "Deactivate" and "Flash/Install iPad Baseband". This will jailbreak your iPhone, install Cydia, flash your baseband to 06.15.00 and deactivate the setup process temporarily. Let it finish, then go get UltraSn0w from Cydia, install it, and your iPhone will be in an unlocked state. You can, however, choose between staying on the iPad Baseband or downgrading it back to 05.13.04. There really isn't a difference in my opinion since the GPS and MMS function problems on the iPad baseband can be patched using Cydia tweaks.

You can only create a DFU IPSW using 6.0.1 ipsw....this will NOT upgrade your iPhone firmware, it will only put your iPhone into DFU mode...
