I read the book years ago but have never seen the movie. Was it good as well as funny?

There are quite a few known actors, such as Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich and Bill Nighy.
I don't know the book, so I can't compare it with the film, but I enjoyed the movie. Sometimes it was just pure nonsense, but funny. I was watching it in German. Sometimes something that makes sense in English gets lost in the translation, and sounds weird in German. It could have been the same in this case.
