lost photos on upgrade, restored automatically

I thought when you updated, that iTunes would take a backup automatically.
The update failed and then it restored automatically from a backup 1 week ago - I have lost all my photos from the last week.
Is there a way to get these photos back?

Unfortunately no. Restoring a device is separate from backing up. You have to manually back up the device before restoring. If there aren't any iTunes or manual backups, you won't be able to get the data back.
