Bloomberg reports that Lowes Cos., which is the second-biggest home-improvement/DIY retailer in the US, has ordered 42,000 iPhone 4s to distribute among its employees throughout the country, in a bid to improve customer service and catch up with rival Home Depot, who last year gave their employees Motorola phones so that they could be better equipped to help customers. The Lowes employees will be using the iPhone 4s to answer questions from customers and to actually ring up purchases. According to Bloomberg, the phones will also act as replacements for out-dated scanner guns that Lowes has been using since the 1990s. Whereas employees previously had to write down item numbers and then log onto computers to check them, they can now do all that and much more from their iPhones, including viewing product information and also connecting to lowes.com. Each Lowes store will have approximately 25 iPhone 4s at their employees disposal, which will eventually also be enabled for processing credit and debit card payments instore.
