Multiple accounts on the same PC

My son is about to get an iphone 4. What I would like to know, if he sync his iphone on my PC on which I sync mine, can we end up with a mixed up with the backup and the apps that we both have?
Any advice how to avoid that is welcomed.

When you first plug the new phone in, choose set up as new phone and choose a different name for it so iTunes doesn't get confused...

or set up a seperate profile for him to log into.....all things will remain seperate.my wife and i do this
