Newby needs help with sincing multiple devices

I have just purchased my first Apple product a Iphone 4s. My two kids have Ipod Touches. We all purchased our devices at the same time and after I set up an Itunes account and sinced my phone the kids got on and sinced their devices. This caused some problems of me receiving their text messages on my phone. The were using messages on their Itouch.

After investigating I found that I should create different libraries which I have done. I quit getting their messages until a few days ago when I started receiving them again.

My question is why and what should I do to remedy the issue?

On your iDevice and on their iDevice as well, go to setting> store and turn off music, apps, book/
Make sure that each one of you have their own Apple ID, not one apple ID which everyone using to setup iMessage, iCloud, FaceTime.
