There definitely isn't a shortage of patents when it comes to Apple, and today we're talking about another interesting one. According to a recent patent filing discovered by AppleInsider, it seems that Apple could be interested in turning your iPhone into a smoke detector.
The patent describes how the iPhone will be equipped with a smaller sensor similar to those found in regular smoke detectors. The sensor needs to be placed near an opening in the handset, like the speaker port, in order for the smoke to enter.
Once the device detects smoke, it will alert the user or can even activate a fire suppression system that could work with Apple HomeKit, as well. Apple's smoke detector patent was first filed for in May 2013 and credits Paul G. Puskarich as its inventor.
