According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, via MacRumors, all three models in Apple’s forthcoming 2017 iPhone range, including the OLED iPhone 8, will come with a standard 5-Watt USB-A power adaptor, rather than the much-rumoured wireless charger, which will instead have to be bought separately.
Kuo says that the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will all have glass bodies on metal frames for the purposes of WPC-standard wireless charging, but the wireless charging accessory will not be bundled with the new phones as standard.
WPC-standard is Qi wireless functionality supported by the Wireless Power Consortium, which ties in with previous rumours that Apple’s new iPhone lineup will use inductive charging rather than wireless charging.
Kuo also said that the iPhone 8 will have an embedded USB-C power delivery IC to facilitate greater charging efficiency, but unlike those rumours last week from Barclays’ Blayne Curtis, Kuo does not think that the new iPhones come complete with a 10W power adaptor with a USB-C connector.
