sync a calendar item or new contact from iphone to outlook

How do you sync a new calendar item to my outlook on my computer that I manually enter into the calendar app on the iphone? Same question for when i create a new contact on my iphone. How do I sync the new contact item from iphone to outlook contacts?

With the phone connected and iTunes running, click on the phone in the left column under Devices. Near the top of the screen there are a number of options starting with "Summary - Info - Apps..." Click on Info. Check mark "Sync Contact with Outlook" and do the same for Calendars. When you sync it should all happen automagically. I've been doing it this way for nearly 4 years.

It's also possible to do this through iCloud but I didn't like what it did to my Outlook and went back to this method.
