The iPhone 5 was finally released yesterday and with it all the speculation concerning the device came to a close. It was revealed that those expecting an A6 chip (nicknamed S5L8950X) instead of a revamped version of the A5X chip, were right to do so. Apple has, like always, been skittish to offer technical specifications about their devices, nevertheless it appears that Cupertino has managed to put out on the market the first ARM Cortex A15 CPU phone. Companies like Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Samsung and Nvidia have already announced they intend to release such technology, but it looks like Apple beat them to it. Its not so surprising
Apple offered a good indication that the new chip is 2 times faster than the A5 and contains graphic processing skills 2 times stronger, but thats all that spilled out. Anandtech claims that the ARM Cortex A15, launched by ARM just a few months ago, has been indeed implemented in the new devices. The producing company calls them the fastest processors ever made for mobile devices.
Since the new iPhone does use these processors this basically means that the differences between Android quad-cores should be non existence since Cortex A15, (even in its dual-core version) is a very strong processor. In the graphics camp, Apple apparently used a PowerVR SGX543MP4 processor, but this information represents pure speculation at the moment.
Later today an analyst from Nomura Securities announced that indeed the A6 is a dual-core Cortex A-15 chip produced via Samsungs 32nm process.
