Market research firm IDC released a new study this week putting a whole different spin on the Apple global domination hypothesis. Possibility becomes certainty, as we are indeed going into that direction, slowly but firmly. The analysis which involves smart connected devices which includes PCs, tablets and smartphones, found that the iOS market is going to grow from the 14.6% it had in 2011 to 17. 4% in 2016.
Apple had a great 2011. It cashed in $489 billion dollars from the smart connected devices market, which basically means it shipped out 916 million units. Thanks to the IDC's research into groups PC, mobile phones and media tablet trackers, the study could make an informed prediction. By 2016 Apple shipments are going to double.
"Whether it's consumers looking for a phone that can tap into several robust 'app' ecosystems, businesses looking at deploying tablet devices into their environments, or educational institutions working to update their school's computer labs, smart, connected, compute-capable devices are playing an increasingly important role in nearly every individual's life," stated IDC vice president, Bob ODonnell.
Bad news for the x86-based Windows PCs as IDC predicts their eminent doom and decline from 35.9% share in 2011 to a steep 25.1% in 2016. In the other major mobile camp, Android is predicted to grow just a tad, from their 2011 29.4% to just 31.1% in 2016. Another interesting subject the study pointed out is that consumers are expected to continue the trend of owning multiple devices.
