But why will cell phone companies let you use wifi and actually prefer it rather than using their data. What about the Internet companies that we are using the data from. What is the difference? Won't one sat they put a stop to it?

I think wifi is bigger than 3G but it is a good question. Why do they prefer us to use wifi?

It simply saves on there bandwidth. There is just so much. And the more people there are using it, the slower and or useless it can be. This weekend in NYC I had full signal almost everywhere I was. But my 3G was never worse because I was sharing that full signal with 9 million people. Here in NEPA I can have one bar and stream HD as a Hotspot to my ipad and watch Netflix because I might be sharing that bandwidth with a 100,000 people (if even that).
