Trouble syncing iPhone 4 (ios 5.0) with Outlook thru iTunes

I updated iTunes to the latest version, upgraded my iPhone 4 to ios 5.0, and now am having trouble syncing. iTunes gets stuck on "Backing up", and error messages pop up. Help please. I've been doing this on a PC with XP platform.
