unable to join

can anyone help me please,this is my 1st iphone and i have,nt a clue how they work but i,m trying to set up my wifi but i just keep gettind a message unable to join does anyone know why,I bought the phone 2nd hand and he did a factory restore so i cant access the settings as i cant get past setting up the wifi
