Unlock iPhone 4 Question!

I have been wondering why there are alot of people out there looking to unlock their iphone's and have a question
What is Unlock? if your phone is unlocked, does that mean you can use your iPhone with any country sim card?
At the moment I can use Telecom XT and Vodafone sim cards on my phone in New Zealand fine!!

Yes Unlock means that you can use other carriers SIM cards in your phone. If your phone is locked it won't allow a different carrier SIM.

Thanks, so I quess if I can use a NZ Telecom XT and Vodafone sim card in my phone it is not locked then? and should be able to use it on any other carriers netowrk?

No worries. Yeah it seems that your phone would be unlocked if you can use two different carriers.

Easy way to make sure it by calling your carrier who supplied the phone and asking them. They should unlock it for you anyway if it was locked.

I'm with Optus in Australia and had a locked phone, took them 2 minutes to unlock it when I called them.
