Unlocking an iphone 3gs

Hey guys,

If i were to purchase an iphone 3gs off ebay and it was locked to a carrier, if i unlocked it through that carrier would i risk bricking it?

Also what are you experience of buying used iphones off ebay/broken iphones off ebay and repairing them
