Over the air/via WiFi, in Settings - General - Software Update on your iPhone.
Upgrading to iOS 10 iPhones ... What you need to know
OTA means Over The Air. Meaning you don't need to plug your phone into a computer to do the update. The capability was introduced with iOS5.
I NEVER use OTA for major updates, such as this one.

Mine went flawless on both iPhone 6 Pluses and my iPhone Air
I'm using OTA most of the time, for major updates also. I never had a problem, until yesterday.
