so why do they charge so much extra if your still basically going to be on contract with them?

Well, I wasn't eligible for an upgrade until 2011, since I just started my current contract in September. A d to get the discount price of 200, u have to start a new 2 yr contract. So I plan to sell my 3GS to recoup most of the cost

But yea for 600 it ought to be unlocked.
