An all-time Canadian heat record of 46.6 °C was reached June 27, 2021 in Lytton, B.C. beating the old record of 45.0 °C that was previously set in July 1937 in Saskatchewan. It is highly likely that this new record won’t even last 24 hours, as scorching temperatures are forecast for another few days. The extreme heatwave is being caused by a significant atmospheric blocking pattern where a massive dome of hot air, reaching high into the atmosphere, remains stagnant over western North America.
Heat spreads east
The dome of oppressive heat will spread further north and eastwards today. As a result, heat warnings are in effect for today (June 28) for much of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.
