I'm getting shoulder surgery in 6 to 8 weeks. I'll be off work for about 3 months after the surgery.

Agreed, the only thing that could protect a diamond is another diamond, and that would be redundant. It takes two weeks, though, to grow a gem-quality diamond the size of a sewing thimble. So, I think time would be an issue. They use hydrogen and methane gas to create a plasma-filled environment which helps the diamonds build up the crystalline structure.
