When I travel I use a heavy duty canvas messenger bag to hold my laptop and my iPad, I use it as one of my carry on bags. Maybe something like that would work when you fly.

I don't take my notebook with me, but the handbag I got is almost that size, I think. My Canon is already placed in there, and I still have space enough for everything else.
