Why do some videos play on iphones, while others dont?

I'm new here.Got questions about viewing video on iPhones

So my understanding is flash videos do not play on iPhones. If this is true, why do videos on YouTube and other sites like Vimeo play correctly?

I have a Wordpress site that I need vids to play for mobile users

Any advice is appreciated.
