Over the past few days, several reports have surfaced claiming that issues with 3D sensor yield are delaying mass production of the iPhone X. Now the Wall Street Journal has thrown its considerable weight behind the reports.
Today’s WSJ story backs up yesterday’s specific rumours that Apple’s suppliers are having significant yield problems with the 3D sensors used in the iPhone X TrueDepth camera module, and that the issue is so bad that production is only in the 10s of thousands each day.
The WSJ also adds further information to the report, saying that the problems are occurring with two components, referred to as “Romeo and Juliet” by those with inside knowledge, and that one of those components is causing more problems than the other. It seems that the “Romeo” component is the more troublesome of the two, as these modules are taking more time to assemble than the Juliet modules, leading to a supply imbalance.
