E-mail issue and question

After checking my mail my icon still says that I have unread mail. How do I get this off or so that they are all read?

Perhaps I'm splitting hairs but you wrote "After checking my mail" which to me means you opened your email app and viewed the contents. Did you actually read each new email? Based on what you wrote my sense is no.
