Ipad charger is compatible with iphone4?

I lost my ipad charger, I need a new one. I heard of that ipad charger can not be used on iphone, because it is 2.1A output but iphone charger is 1A output. It can hurt iphone's battery life if charging with this. I want to use ipad charger to provide power for my iphone when out, so does this is suitable for my iphone? It really can take impacts on iphone's battery? Waiting for your opinion!
