Messaging between iOS and Android

Is there such an app to do that? On android device you have whatsapp and ios doesn't have it. But is there some kind of an app similar to whatsapp where you don't need to log in to message your friends?

It's only an iPhone app, not an iPad app

Whatsapp is available in iTunes store. And it was free some months ago. I downloaded it when it was free.
