I'm surprised to see a German tombstone in Canada.
They emigrated to Canada around 1910 from what's now the Ukraine, where some Germans settled in the time of Catherine the Great in the 18th century.

You'll notice though, that when my grandfather was buried, they used the English spelling of Sohn.

I thought that immigrants would use English, even if their native language has been German. It's a - positive - surprise to see I was wrong.

It's a beautiful tombstone.

They also chose black granite, which has weathered much better than some of the tombstones made of softer stone.

That's one of the reasons why the ornaments look that good.

Do you know what the four words below the familiy name mean in English?
Just curious. I could translate them for you, if you want me to.

It means "Rest here in peace".
Is this a common phrase on German tombstones?

Yes, it is. More often without "here". Some of our tombstones just show a R. I. P. (the Latin version - requiescat/requiescant in pace).

It's exactly "Here rest in peace".

This watchtower was once used by Hungarians to "seal" the border between Hungary and Austria. Now, it's standing in Austria, and it's only purpose is to observe animals, or simply enjoy the view of the landscape and/or the national park.
