Slow 3G - Verizon's Achilles' heel?

I am a new AT&T customer! I came from Verizon, and WoW what a difference! I always thought Verizon was the better of the 2. But yes it depends where you live and who's tower your near. IMO there is a major difference in 3G Between the two! CDMA vs GSM. Winner is GSM:) I wish I new this 3 years ago lol. I waited so long for the iPhone to come to Verizon, thinking Verizon is the best. Jokes on me! That's what I get for listing to all the commercials. It just shows what marketing can do! All the dissing on AT&T from Verizon. The only thing I'm missing from Verizon is my 30 dollar unlimited data plan! :( O well maybe one day they will bring it back.

Although we have more that 3X the 3G speed, we have to deal with way more bad coverage areas. And you gave up your unlimited? That's the main reason I haven't left AT&T. Plus their good to me.

I'm in the Manchester, NH area and using the speedtest.net app I got 1.45Mbps download and .75Mbps upload on the first run and 2.09Mbps download and .47Mpbs upload on the second. I don't think that's too bad. It's pretty good, actually. I just can't wait until 4G LTE is in my area and Appled releases a 4G phone. Where I live I'm just outside of the coverage area, but I travel into 4G areas all the time for work. I will say that my Verizon 4G LTE hotspot in those areas is ridiculously fast!

I'll bet it is. I'll be glad when AT&T catches up, even though that a long ways off. But buy the time my contacts up I should have 4G coverage.

Check out these speeds.

I have vzw and the speed test results are pretty slow. my old droid x would double the speed in the same spot. I suspect its something with the iphone/verizon. However I have no problem browsing?!

That is weird. There was that YouTube video where AT&T & Verizon phone were compared. AT&T got faster speeds but browsing, video streaming and app downloads had equal results! In fact, the Verizon phone was faster on some of the tests.

I don't think the tests (and # of bars) are definitive.

I purchased the iphone 4S 16gb in white the day that it was available in stores. Data speeds were TERRIBLE. I called Verizon 2-3x reported the speed problems. Trouble ticket after trouble ticket. Resetting the phone, the whole nine yards. However, I did get a few things to work, of course after they had already sent out a replacement unit in the mail.

After the iOS 5.0.1 update rolled out, the representative said I should reset network settings under general, reset, then click reset network settings. Following this I did a *228 update and did a soft reset on the device. Data speeds and battery life had improved. I'm not sure how and I certainly don't know why but they had. It was quite shocking. We all know Apple or Verizon would never admit there is a problem but I think there was something in the software, I could be wrong.

I switched to the replacement device they had sent yesterday. This device is a certified like-new replacement shipped directly from Verizon. The difference is that this device went through a 120 point inspection before being sent to me. Hate to admit it but the new iphones are not tested directly (individually) by Verizon before selling them. Again, I have no idea if this is even relevant but my data issues appear to be resolved. Testing yesterday evening (off-peak times) I was getting above 2 mbps. Today I received ~2.4 mbps on multiple tries during peak data traffic times. I will attach the one screen shot. No I didn't accidentally use wifi or something as other people have done (my home connection is 10.0 mbps). I am quite impressed.

I backed up the old phone and then transferred it to the new replacement. The speedtest.net app saved my previous tests and I have never gotten above 1.5 mbps download on the cellular network. That test was conducted at 2:36 am, obviously when the network was free. I hope my experience helps anyone with the same issues. It is a pain in the butt!

Wow! With AT&T at that time of morning I could triple those download speeds.

You could triple those speeds, your right. But you would have to have service for the speed test to work... Just saying.

Of course. I mean on bad days the speeds you recorded is what I get.
