Apple started selling refurbished iPhones. There are already some available in the US Apple Store online.

Yes, and if your new 7 blows up in warranty they'll trade it for one of those refurbished numbers that blew up last week.
Apple has been using refurbished iPhones as warranty replacements for years.
After repairing them and testing them thoroughly.

There won't be many of those, I have doubts that it happened at all.
Ahem. iPhone 6 Plus - bricked at 8 months. Replacement 6 Plus - dead from plastic from cradle stuck in lightning port. iPhone SE - died from toxic wallpaper reported elsewhere.
It has also been mentioned that at least one Genius quit due to dissatisfaction with the process of taking in a 6 Plus with TD and sending out a refurbished 6 Plus of the same vintage.
It is widely reported and never to my notice denied that the device gives you for one that fails under warranty is refurbished.
