Unlocking cellphones becomes illegal Saturday 01/26/13

currently at work so i wouldnt be able to provide them with the IMEI number, but some research fromt he ATT site shows there should be no problem:

What are the eligibility requirements for unlocking iPhone?

All requests for iPhone unlock must meet general iPhone unlock eligibility requirements before an iPhone can be unlocked.
AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:
  • The person requesting the unlock is:
    • A current AT&T customer, or
    • A former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account.
  • The iPhone was designed for use on the AT&T network.
  • All contract obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked have been fully satisfied.
  • The iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen.
"A former AT&T customer...." Looks like it should work for ya! :-)

Hey guys, I've just read here **Moderated** that factory apple iphone unlock will be legal if you order it for iPhone bought before 2013. Is the fact that true?

I purchased iphone on ebay and intend to order unlock. However this news confused me.

Many thanks,

As of now, iPhoneForums is deciding on how the unlocking discussions should be handled here on out, so all unlocking threads will be locked upon publishing until this issue has been resolved by the owners.

In terms of the news, this only affects the US and US based phones.
