Unlocking through iTunes

I am waiting for vodafone to unlock my phone so i can use it on other carriers. Ive been told this can take upto 72 hours and they do it through itunes? Is this correct? If so, how do I do it?

yes you just plug the phone into itunes and it will say congratulations your phone is now unlocked

ah right, so you dont have to update or anything? What sim card do you have to have in at the time?
