Why the heck would Apple leave out widgets. I love mine. I only use a few but they are very handy especially my news and weather widget.
If Lithium-Ion is an issue for Batterys and the iPhone uses a Lithium-Ion battery than it is an issue apple still needs to look at. Especially when adding a LTE radio which is a battery hog.
A 4G network is a MUST for the next iPhone. Most carriers will have a 4G network by the end of 2012 and without this addition the iPhone will only slip further behind Google and Android in sales.
As for the screen, how can Apple break a trademark on the Retina screen when they own the trademark. They can apply the same technology to making a larger 4" Retina screen that would still be trademarked due to the process of making the Retina screen having already been trademarked by Apple. That is unless you are referring to the fact that all the iPhones thus far have had a 3.5" screen which is only a staple feature and not a trademark of the design. And you don't think that apple will break from the norm of having a 3.5" screen in the iPhone.

Widgets are background applications that run constantly. Apple doesn't allow that for one very simple reason. It slows down the phone.
Apple is pushing battery makers to give them better tech. But just because Apple says jump doesn't make it change any faster.
I doubt it. The iPhone 4S is the first iPhone that is capable of being sold to most markets around the world. By spring of next year, Androids 51% world wide install base is going to be a lot smaller.
A "Retina" display requires a 300 pixel per inch density. Apple only has 3 screen sizes. 480x320, 960x640 and 1024x768. Which means if they use the 960x640 (326 PPI) they can only expand it to 3.8" and still keep to the 300 PPI standard.
Now they could do something interesting and go to 1024x768 at 300 PPI. The screen would be 4.3" in size. Which is very doable based on the current tech used to make the 960x640. But that would increase the cost of the phone. That is something Apple isn't interested in at present. But it is feasible they could do it for the iPhone 5 since they now have enough apps on the iPad side to start filling in the gaps for iPhone apps. Remember, on an iPad a 960x640 app doesn't fill the screen. They use direct pixel positioning not scaling. The reason is speed. But the other side of the coin is, the iPhone only apps would still look bigger because they would display at 3.8" inside of the 4.3" screen. Which is still larger than the current 3.5" display.
So if I was betting man the iPhone 5, if they change the display size at all, will be a 4.3" display at resolution of 1024x768.
And remember, you saw it here first should I end up being right
An afterthought has occurred. The could also do a 3.92" display at 326 PPI and keep using the same tech they have now to make a new screen.
So I will call it between 3.92 and 4.3 at 1024x768.
