HOW TO - Fix Recovery Loop following a downgrade

HOW TO - Fix Recovery Loop following a downgrade

iPhone4 users are experiencing a recovery mode loop following a 4.3.4 downgrade which cannot be exited using the normal methods, such as TinyUmbrella's "Exit Recovery" option.

The following process has been proven to fix this problem, and has the added benefit of jailbreaking the device at the same time.

First you will need a copy of the latest (rc19) redsn0w jailbreak. This can be downloaded from here:
redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc19.zip for Windows - download link
redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc19.zip for Mac OS X - download link

Next, you will need a copy of the 4.3.3 firmware (or whichever firmware you have downgraded your iPhone to). You should have this available from your downgrade, but if you need to download it again, use our sticky here to source the right file - http://www.iphoneforums.net/forum/i...ple-ios-firmware-download-links-iphone-17213/

Finally, you should download the latest TinyUmbrella, if you are not already using, it from here - The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

Windows7 and Vista users should set the compatibility properties for redsn0w.exe by right clicking on the EXE file, choosing "properties", switching to the Compatibility tab, and selecting "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" and "Run this program as an administrator".

Now launch redsn0w, select the IPSW file for your version of IOS, and follow the instructions. Make sure you set the "Install Cydia" item on the options screen.

The normal jailbreak process will now run on your iPhone, however THE PROCESS WILL HANG at the "Installing Activation Bundles" step. You should see the iPhone spinner in front of the pineapple. THIS IS OK.

You now need to reset the iPhone by holding power and home for 10 seconds.

The phone will now reboot and you will STILL be in recovery mode. DON'T PANIC!

Now, you can launch TinyUmbrella, click your iPhone in the list of devices, and press "Exit Recovery".

It WILL work this time. Your phone will reboot into an untethered jailbroken state.

Now you should have a fully functional downgraded and jailbroken iPhone which is no longer stuck in a recovery mode loop.
Enjoy!

When I launch redsn0w, there is nothing to select when it tells me to select the correct IPSW...what am I doing wrong?

OKay i created an account just to show my thanks as i have successfully downgraded from phone 4 4.2.10 to 4.2.8!!!

from following a related post here but did it different

1. startup tiny umbrella

2. start the TSS server
(/etc/hosts file should now point to 127.0.0.1)

3. put phone in dfu mode

4. alt+restore and choose 4.2.8 firmware

this will restore and after about 75% the phone will reboot into the recovery loop....
itunes symbol with the usb cable

5. start redsnow

6. select the 4.2.8 version of firmware (follow instructions and choose install cydia)

7. when phone procedure hits
("Installing Activation Bundles") hold down the power and home for 10 seconds

8. after reboot go into tiny umbrella and exit recovery.. you are now jailbroken and go into cydia and and find the untether!!!!

all right my ipod is seriously starting to earitate me. iv been stuck in recovery mode for the past 4 to 5 days. last night i thought i was done with recovery mode but when i tryed to sync it to itunes again today it went right back into recovery mode. the only difference is that i can see the symble when the battery is charging when its connected to my pc. last night i had it up and running with 4.3.5 and had most of my apps back on it. im using an ipod touch 4g and i tryed the tiny umbrella recovery fix (not fixrecovery43) but tinyumbrella dosnt realize that my ipod is in recovery. can someone pleas help me. i have my 4.3.4 shsh saved but when iv tryed to downgrade b4 id dint work. and right about now i dont care about jailbrake or anything. i just want it back to stock anything. as long as it goes back to normal.

My question is - There's a user with 4.3.4 who used Tiny umbrella etc etc to try to downgrade to 4.3.3. He was quite close too till he got the 1013 (I think it was) message. I think he even saw the iphone being installed. How was he able to do that if he not even saved a blob

Question..... How did you edit your host file???

I installed tinyumbrella, to my surprise tinyumbrella was able to locate my SHSH 4.2.8 from Cydia. But when I performed the procedure I did not get the results I was hoping for... At this point my phone was now stuck in "recovery mode"... I tried many times to just restore through iTunes but nothing happened. Just an iTunes sign and a cable pointing to it. I also spent 6+ hours on the phone with apples top technical advisor trying to find out why I couldn't even do a simple restore. Eventually I was able to get my phone to restore but I had to do it from someone else's computer. After my iPhone was restored i was able to sinc and reinstall all apps and contacts.....

For a while I was thinking I had done something wrong... So I gave it another shot... And again.. And again.. etc.. Each time with the same results... Needing to recover from a different PC...

I later spent many days pounding my head agents a wall.. And to find that in my /etc/ section there was 2 host files. 1 was from apple and the other from tinyumbrella. Both files were identical. I relocated the one from apple and then was able to get my phone to restore w/iTunes.... I am now just running a tethered JB on 4.2.10.. But this jailbreak has me always watching my phone..

Please help.. Thanx

I registered as well to show my thanks.

I happened to be tired of the lag in 4.3.3, and wanted to go to 4.3.2. I tried downgrading, but realized I didnt have SHSH for 4.3.2. I tried going back to 4.3.3 after and got into the boot loop. Even when just trying to go to stock firmware (obviously).

Instead of Redsn0w, I actually used sn0wbreeze and I wanted to comment it works basically the same way. I wanted to make sure my baseband was preserved, so I followed the instructions but instead of redsn0w I ran sn0wbreeze, made my ISPW, restored, and everything worked fine. I didnt even have to use 'exit recovery' from tinyumbrella.

Thanks!

I realize now that all my attempts to dg 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 (same base band) with TU & iTunes are being messed up by the step to adjust my PC host file pointing wrong!
When I try to save the change by adding
"74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com",my PC say I cannot save ? I am signed on as adm.
I need help. I've tried PC (win 7) restore to a week earlier; cleaned up everything; reinstalled everything and still can't dg.
I have a friend sending me another PC to try. Any help would be appreciated. I have dev acc and the option of install iOS 5b5.
Would like to go back to 4.3.3 for jb apps that don't work on beta with ip4. Thank you anyone.
