May Return my 4S Due to Battery Life

Sorry; that was meant to be tongue in cheek.

Oh! Well with all these "my iPhone battery doesn't last all week" and "I'm upset that I have to charge my iPhone every 3 days" posts, I was blind to your attempted humor. Apologies.

So... why is my phone different. Did I bring something in from google contacts and calendar? Did I download a bad app? do I have my settings on a bad selection? Bill

Every phone is technically different, due to how electronics are manufactured. While they try to make batches of them to meet certain specifications, they can never test all of the chips 100%, hence why they only do sampling after setting their expected yield.

It is now time to drop back 10 and look over all my notes from my Android days. There is something oddly reminiscent of what you guys are describing.

I am now starting to closely track my usage vs battery life and I do see a disturbing trend. I don't think it is the new CPU that is at fault but the new GPU. Some testing will need to be done to verify what I am perceiving.

That's a stupid reason to return your phone just walk around with Damn charger get a car charger and portable charger.

Actually, it is not stupid. Not everyone has access to wall power or the ability to carry an external battery pack adapter on their persons. This could be due to a job requirement.

Just because you believe someone should be able to do something doesn't mean they can. Hence why opinions have very little value in a conversation of this nature.

The iPhone 4 might actually be a better fit if the apps that are being used drain the battery slower than the do on the iPhone 4S. Since most cellular providers give you the option to return a phone in the first 14 days of use, now is a good time to flesh these issues out.

fills the needs of one individual more than another phone does. My concern with the Apple phone is that it represents a compromise in a few areas that I am not sure I want to compromise in. The battery life is supposed to be a clear plus versus the energy sucking first generation LTE chips. So far the Apple battery while better is not a "clear plus". The Android phone I would return the Apple for does allow me to change the battery on the go, or more likely, switch to a high capacity battery. The browsing issue of web pages not auto sizing when enlarged requires me use Opera in the single column mode. While this addresses the issue, it represents a compromise over the browser of the Android phone I would return the Apple for. The Verizon sales person told me that the Apple phone had a new forward facing notification light that I really wanted. It does not have a forward facing notification light, but rather a rear facing flash that goes off once when an alert is recieved versus the continuous flash of the Android front facing led. This issue represents a compromise to the issue of visual alert. There are other compromises as well. For me it will boil down to whether or not the things that Apple does better outweigh the compromises. At this point I am thinking they do not. I will investigate the Galaxy Nexus and Android Ice Cream Sandwich to see if this phone might be a better choice for those things which are important for me, and not whether it is a "better phone". ANOTHER UPDATE: Different battery day happening. Charged the phone to 100% last night, same as night before. BUT, I added 6 mail accounts (fetch 30) last night, USA Today, iPF.net, AP (news), and TV.com apps. In fact I stayed up an extra hour and a half last night watching tv.com and YouTube in order to drain battery down to 11% before charging. So I guess technically it charged 1 hour less than the night before, but still for 7 hours. After pulling off charger at 5:00 this morning I've used it about same amount as yesterday (cigar break...8-), but as compared to my performance yesterday in post #31 above, today at 10:00 I'm down to 86% battery versus yesterday I still had 96 % at 11:30. All the settings are the same as in post # 20 above. Very strange. I have no idea what I did to change settings, etc., but I'm starting to wonder about a power leak since I charged equivalently and only added those few apps.

Skull One..after I did what you suggested, I noticed that my phone , after charging all night, got to 100%, but never got the lightning bolt. And as soon as I took it off the charger, I saw serious degradation in battery after taking a 10 minute call...about 5 %. Tried plugging it back in for a few more hours and can not get the lightning bolt.

This can't be normal.

Yeah, on that lighting bolt and plug icon. I got them backwards yesterday. D'OH!!!!! I am very sorry about that.

You should see lighting bolt first then it switches to plug. That's what I get for trying to use my old memory.

I wonder if anyone experiencing battery drain more than usual ...has gmail mail and calendars set on their iPhone. Could this app be the source of issues?

I am also very dissapointed with battery life. I have to recharge my by lunch or it will die soon after. It is hard to believe that they improve software, with Apps that will use more battery and Siri, and yet, did not TRULLY upgrate the battery. Very disspointing. I will have to buy one of those portable AA chargers to keep w me.

I am going to try and run some side by side battery tests against my old iPhone 4 over the next few nights. All of these complaints and something that I have noticed in the last 36 hours has me scratching my head. I don't believe it is a Siri or even an iOS 5 issue. It is starting to look like a GPU issue. But I can't be sure until I run some quantitative tests.

I have never done an "eased in" approach. Theoretically, I would say re-sync each subsection in iTunes manually. The only thing I don't know is if app data is resunk with the app. My guess is no. But again I have no working knowledge to be sure.

You are now at the limit of my knowledge base. So if you do this, you are going to be helping/teaching me now :)

I have usage 9 hrs 34 min
Standby 1day, 1 hr

For first two days I let it get so low til it shut off and then recharged it. Took 2.5 hrs. This is same as a deep cycle, correct?

And do my numbers look ok, this is with 20 songs, 4 videos, 34 photos and 30 apps. Avail space 8.7 GB may return for larger one, haven't really taken videos or pictures yet. What do you suggest?
