Been stuck on 4.2.1 for ages, have loads of cydia packages installed, I'm just about to update and rejailbreak using the new red snow. I have backed up my cydia packages using aptbackup (pkgbackup didn't work for me) and backed up with iTunes.
Is there any benefit to restoring rather than updating to 5.01, before I rejailbreak? Or do I just click update?

I always do a fresh restore, updating from an older firmware(especially as old as 4.2.1) can cause lots of compatibility issues and you may end up needing to do a fresh restore anyway.

excellent thanks for quick answer. Been waiting for this a long time!

So should I restore all my stuff from iTunes before or after I jailbreak? Or does it do that as part of restore?

After you restore the phone it will ask you if you want to restore from backup or setup as a new iPhone, I always jailbreak before restoring from backup, but I don't think it matters.

Ok all successfully done, except for restoring Cydia packages. I am a little concerned however, that if I just reinstall them as a job lot it will include a good few that aren't compatible with 5.01 and cause crash or problems. Will I still have mobile substrate safe mode?
Or am I better installing them one at a time manually and slowly? It might be better to make a fresh start...

I would install manually one at a time. If you restore your cydia packages and some are not compatible it will be damn near impossible to figure out which ones are causing the phone to crash into safemode.

cool.... I had a lot of crap on there anyway; its a good chance to reassess what I actually need. I think a couple have been clashing for a while as it sometimes goes into safe mode on reboot. I'll prioritize biteSMS; lockinfo, 3G unrestrictor, iconoclasm (it has the best implementation of 5x5 icons i think), SBSettings....Page preview another good one. Looking forward to trying out the new features of 5.01.
Its taking a hell of a long time to load it all back on...gonna go to bed and finish up in the morning (its 1am here)

A great way to reduce the time, in case you didnt already know, is instead of installing right away on each one just click "Queue" and you can select multiple packages to install at once.

Ok thanks mate I didnt know that! All this respringing is a pain. I'm getting there now; just found Pagepreview isn't supported, shame, it was better than Overboard. Other than that most of my tweaks seem to be working...not sure about this notification centre business...thats where I had SBsettings....I don't like change! I'll get used to it...

Oh cool Lockinfo integrates with notifications. SBsettings won't respring for me tho...I used that a lot. Its gonna take a while to get everything playing just right.

Just spent last week or so getting Ubuntu running a dual boot on my laptop, getting pretty tired eyes from staring at screens!

Anyone else had this problem? I select respring from the notifications centre SBsettings and it just hangs at the spinning rainbow circle?
edit:ok seems to be working now
