Why won't iTunes recognize that my iphone has already been set up?

i can't use itunes to add music to my phone, it keeps suggesting i set it up (either as a new phone or restore from a backup) and theres no way of quitting but it's already set up

it's an iphone 4, on ios 5.0

Try deleting your account on iTunes.

sorted, unbeliveably the way to do it is click on set up as new iphone, and then it gives you the option of changing the name and then continues to itunes as if nothing has happened, and you still have all your aps/messages/numbers etc.
