I had the same battery problems on my iPhone 4, and since upgrading to 5.0.1 the battery is lasting longer than it ever has :)

Well with the iPhone 4s it's different

Got a big question.
Does setting time zone off in settings increase battery life ???

Some reports say it does, I looked at a report on cnet tv talking about that. But like I told the apple rep, you shouldn't have to turn off features to resolve battery problems. I mean the usuals like Bluetooth, and wi-fi are a given when your not in areas where you can use them. They will drain your battery a bit when their constantly searching for signal, but this issues has a lot of people nearly running the bare minimum. I mean don't run any notifications, locations services, Siri, don't fetch emails, and don't play games. The reason for having an iPhone is almost eliminated. I hope Apple learned from this because you lose customer base with these kind of mistakes, especially when your competitors are stepping it up on their products.

Yeah so it looks like they need to be swooped out. Check this out, I had the phone on the charger over night. I wakeup at about 3:30 a.m est to use the bathroom afterwards check on the phone it's 100%. So I leave it on the charger, I get out of bed close 8:00 a.m est and my phone battery says 94% with the phone being plugged in. So I start doing things with while it's plugged in, and the battery started draining with the charge icon visible. I'm not going to even test this phone any further, I'm going back to the Apple Store and ask them to switch it out.

Instead of responding to a single post I am going to spew a few interesting observations and thoughts I have had since 5.0.1 was released to the public. I'll break this into two sections. Opinions and factual. Lets start with factual.

Factual:

iOS 5.0.1 final release to public is NOT the same patch that was released as Beta 2. The version numbers are in fact different by 1 character. NewdestinyX post had too much of a ring of truth to it so I spent a few hours figuring out the whys. It seems they rushed 5.0.1 out the door knowing full well that the patch wouldn't fix everyone. But they need to shut down a backdoor that Charlie Miller found that allowed unsigned code to be ran on a non-jailbroken device.

iOS 5.0.1 does NOT fix the battery drain issue for everyone. So there are BUGS still causing issues.

iOS 5 does not have the ability to do a differential patch grab based on the version you are actually running. Apple really failed with this one in my opinion. Beta testers really do have to do a wipe, reinstall and restore it seems because of this. The iOS 5 beta had shown so much promise to go beyond the "old way" of doing patches. Thank you NewdestinyX for your insight.

The iPhone 4S has the ability to drain the battery FASTER than the slower charging rate used between 85% and 100%. This can be replicated while playing certain games after the phone reaches 100% charge. I have now replicated this issue twice.

Opinion:

The iPhone 4S' ability to discharge the phone faster than the charging rate can occur while the user is doing nothing with the phone. I have NO direct evidence of this other than reports on the internet. But my factual ability to do it with a game means it should be possible to do it with any software.

I am currently of the thought that there ISN'T a physical flaw with the iPhone 4S. If there was it would be WAY cheaper for Apple to swap the batteries out than to deal with the number of returns/replacements that people are currently demanding.

I now firmly believe that the iPhone 4S was rushed to market along with iOS 5 due to Steve Jobs health concerns. iOS 5 doesn't seem to have been properly vetted for the 4S. Which is why we are seeing such erratic battery life with the 4S but not so much with the iPhone 4 or iPad.

I don't believe there is a single coder at Apple that has a clue for the real reason why iOS 5 is acting wonky with the iPhone 4S.

Sorry for the thread jack... Hello, I have gone to apple after noticing my battery usage is lower than my 4 since i have switched to the 4s. Went to genius bar yesterday and off course they hook up my phone to their pc and sais theres nothing wrong with my battery usage. Is this usage normal with moderate use? I dont know what to do, but Im not happy with my battery consumption! It seemed like they were not willing to do anything by the rep stating the phone is performing as they expect. Any advise what I should do and if my battery usage is bad??? 3 hrs 40 min use its at 28% Thanks.

If that 3 hours and 40 minutes is PURE 3D or very graphically intense gaming, then the battery percentage is probably closer to correct.

If not, then that usage is NOT typical and is currently believed to be a bug in iOS 5 for the 4S. I have done extensive testing and at 3 hours 40 minutes with only 8 hours of standby your battery should only be down to about 48%.

This was not pure gaming, more like moderate use of the phone. A little bit of facebook, a couple texting, very little browsing the net, and maybe 20 min playing city friends... How do i get apple to replace my phone if my battery consumption is high? Im very dissatisfied with this phone. I sold my 4 to upgrade to this, now i have to charge my phone twice a day...

Your phone is "probably" fine. Odds are data carried over from your 4 is causing an issue. Some people have had great success with simply "starting over". Wipe the phone, sync contacts/music/photos and manually bring your apps back over. While this is a ROYAL pain because you lose all your game save data, some people swear by it.

Personally, I am waiting for iOS 5.0.2 and just living with the current issue.

Skull makes some good points. The rumour is that Jobs did not like the 4" display on the iPhone 5 and thought it would fragment iPhone users the way Android does. The 'insider' also claims the phone had poor battery life. I assume this is right after reading Jobs's autobiography. I also think the 4S was probrably rushed out as Apple had pressure to put something out, the 4S was the 5's backup.

I still have not got any reasoning behind constantly firing the infrared sensor while the screen is on. I assume there is slightly different 5.0.1 OS for each device?

This is what i'm getting from first full charge out the box running IOS 5.0.1

Is it typical for your phone to only get 1 Bar of service? If so, that is actually REALLY good battery life. If not, then yes, you are affected the same way a lot of us are on the 4S. You can either wait it out, my current choice, or complain and start over with a new phone.

That is 100% correct. The iPhone 4/3GS and iPad 1/2 do not have this issue because none of Siri's baseline code is distributed in their builds nor do they have the extra IR sensor that iFixIt found in the 4S.

I thought that. BTW, I am on my 3rd replacement 4S. I am getting the best battery life I have seen. Close to 5 hours of use and 24hrs standby. My use is 30% graphics intense games, 20% email, 20% texts and 30% various apps. I use my phone hard, meaning when the screen is on, I bounce around app to app to email to game quickly multi tasking between several items at once. I can live with anything over 5 hours. Before 5.0.1 I could hardly hit 3.5hours use and 14 hours standby, so something has improved.

I have posted my comments on the 4S's infrared on various news stories about the battery comment section hoping something will get back to Apple. I have also sent them feedback on this. Unless they get a ton of feedback who knows if they will ever address it.
